Voting is a method for a group such as a meeting or an electorate to make a decision or express an opinion—often following discussions, debates, or election campaigns.

Process of voting

Representative democracies discern the will of the people by a common voting procedure:

  • Individual voter registration and qualification,
  • Opening the election for a set time period,
  • Registration of voters at established voting locations,
  • Distribution of ballots with preset candidates, issues, and choices (including the write-in option in some cases),
  • Selection of preferred choices (often in secret, called a secret ballot),
  • Secure collection of ballots for unbiased counting, and
  • Proclamation of the will of the voters as the will of the people for their government.

What is your opinion on compulsory voting and why do you feel that way?
Q. I am doing a school project on whether or not making voting mandatory should be made a law or not. I would like some good opinions from anybody. So tell me what you think! Any opinions would be helpful, the more information the better. It would help if you also left your age so I can see what different age groups opinions are. Thanks!

A. I think democracy is a participation sport, not a spectator sport. The more people who participate, the better democracies do. But participation is more than just going to the polls. To be a good voter, you have to take some time and effort to educate yourself on the issues. Without that, voting really does no good. So the problem with compulsory voting is that you can force people to vote but you can't pass a law that people have to listen to both sides of every argument before they vote. For democracy to work at all, you have to have a high rate of literacy, and you have to have a truly free press. This was understood by our founding fathers. Today our democracy is not working as well as it might because (1) not enough people… [cont.]

What do you think about the voting process in America?
Q. I want to know if there is controversial arguments about it, like how Al Gore won the popular votes but Bush won the electoral votes. Is there anything you want to change about the voting process? Why or Why not?

A. "it has been corrupted by the democrats with tax payer funded groups like acorn.acorn is being sued for voter fraud in 15 states for the last election." Actually only two people were found guilty of voter fraud, and one of them was Ann Coulter. Errors in registrations by such groups as ACORN never results in significant Voter fraud. Our voting system is pretty bad in a number of ways: 1) No mandates to check on the reliability and bias (other countries use exit polls, but our elections are so bad we refuse to check them) 2) The people who run the elections are often the party chair to whatever part won the statehouse 3) We rely on electronic machines without paper trails 4) 1-3% of votes that are spoiled are minority votes 5)… [cont.]
