Nounsocial sciences
From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. The social sciences are the fields of academic scholarship that explore aspects of human society. "Social science" is commonly used as an umbrella term to refer to a plurality of fields outside of the natural sciences. These include: anthropology, archaeology, economics, geography, history, linguistics, political science, international studies and, in some contexts, psychology. Subjects such as international relations and social work are concerned primarily with application and do not constitute social sciences per se. The term may be used, however, in the specific context of referring to the original science of society established in 19th century sociology. Émile Durkheim, Karl Marx and Max Weber are typically cited as the principal architects of modern social science by this definition. Positivist social scientists use methods resembling those of the natural sciences as tools for understanding society, and so define science in its stricter modern sense. Interpretivist social scientists, by contrast, may use social critique or symbolic interpretation rather than constructing empirically falsifiable theories, and thus treat science in its broader, classical sense. In modern academic practice researchers are often eclectic, using multiple methodologies (for instance, by combining quantitative and qualitative techniques). The term "social research" has also acquired a degree of autonomy as practitioners from various disciplines share in its aims and methods. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License Is Social Sciences a requirement to become a psychologist? Q. I was checking out some of the courses offered at a local college, and under pre-university programs they had Social Sciences. It states that it'll prepare you for anthropology, psychology, etcetc. It says you'd recieve a degree in Social Sciences. I'm wondering if this is a requirement to further my education, or if its a waste of two years. Asked by Jase G - Mon Oct 5 11:42:03 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. If you are starting your college education at a two-year college and it does not offer a psychology major, social sciences is ok, but it would be better to major in psychology if it is available. At the four-year college, you should major in psychology. Then, after you have earned your bachelor's degree, you will need to spend about five years in graduate school to earn a Ph.D. or Psy.D. Answered by ownpool - Mon Oct 5 11:48:56 2009 Can I use Average Life expectancy as an example of a Normal Curve in nature or social sciences? Q. I have to come up with an example from nature or social sciences for my Quantitative Methods class that would follow a Normal Curve. Would average life expectancy be an example of this? I am thinking it would be because it is the average age that the majority of people live to be. Some fall below the average and some will live beyond the average. I am going by the average for my state which is 75.1 years. What about average American woman's shoe size? I can't use height because we used that as an example in class and my professor said we can't use any example from class or from the text. Asked by justme - Tue Feb 17 10:22:30 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Expected age is not normally distributed. Imagine a normal curve with an average at about 72 years. You will have a cluster of people who die at about 72 years, but the data is funny as you move down the tails. As you move through the ages of 25 to 55 the death rate is almost steady. This would clearly not be normal in this region. Also, no body lives over some age like 120 (I think). The data goes to zero out past that point which is also not normal. Now... this said... you could claim that death rates are approx. normal and this may be true... but I wouldn't try it if I were you. Another problem is that you say you want to use average life expectancy. This does not really have a distribution like you are looking for. This is… [cont.] Answered by Happy Humanist - Tue Feb 17 15:13:38 2009 Studying social sciences at the Open University?
Q. Hi I will be studying for a BSc in Social Sciences at the OU, starting in May 2009 and consisting of a Level 1, 60 point course. Can anyone suggest to me some useful reading materials along with free on-line resources? I am new to social sciences, so all the help I can get to put me on the right path would be great. Asked by Lewis - Sun Nov 16 15:21:33 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. I have the Open Univesity level 1 Certificate in Social Sciences and used it to get into uni. Its a very comprehensive course and they ease you in gently. They give you all the books you need and on that course you dont have to worry about refrencing from anything other than the texts provided. You also dont get graded on the first 120 points at level 1 and thats the same at all Unis. I did it in 2004 and my first essay only had to be 750 words which is a lot lower than actual uni. The beauty of OU is that most people are mature students so they expect you to be rusty on your skills. A good beginners Sociology book is Understanding Sociology by Tony Bilton. Its available on Amazon and it is quite a comphrehensive book for the beginner.… [cont.] Answered by NONAME - Sun Nov 16 16:36:21 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "social sciences" STU grad heads to Scotland for PhD - New Brunswick Business Journal
