Political science is a social science concerned with the theory and practice of politics and the description and analysis of political systems and political behavior. It is often described as the study of politics defined as "who gets what, when and how". Political science has several subfields, including: political theory, public policy, national politics, international relations, and comparative politics.

Political science is methodologically diverse. Approaches to the discipline include classical political philosophy, interpretivism, structuralism, and behavioralism, realism, pluralism, and institutionalism. Political science, as one of the social sciences, uses methods and techniques that relate to the kinds of inquiries sought: primary sources such as historical documents and official records, secondary sources such as scholarly journal articles, survey research, statistical analysis, case studies and model building.

"As a discipline" political science "lives on the fault line between the 'two cultures' in the academy, the sciences and the humanities." Thus, in some American colleges where there is no separate School or College of Arts and Sciences per se, political science may be a separate department housed as part of a division or school of Humanities or Liberal Arts.

What are colleges with good political science departments?
Q. I'm really interested in studying political science, and I want to go to a school that has a good department for it. I'm Republican, so I'd prefer a school that isn't extremely left-wing, but I'm not a right-wing fanatic or anything so don't refer me to some Baptist university haha! I'm an average student. I have around a 3.5 GPA, graduating with honors, and expect to score a 2000 or above on the SAT. Any suggestions?

A. The following is a list of top graduate programs in political science compiled by US News: If you are only looking for an undergraduate program, bear in mind that these political science departments correlate at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Meaning, that the best graduate programs in the field usually also have the best undergrad programs as well. Hope this helps!

What can I do with a political science degree?
Q. What kind of job would I be able to get with a degree in Political Science? I'm debating going for a second degree in poli-sci, but I want to know that I'll be able to use it later on. My primary degree is acutally in the medical field, so I don't know if poli-sci will be a waste of my time.

A. Check out these websites, which have a good list of descriptions of political science careers: if you plan to go to med school, you can major in just about anything. I'd guess that you would want the double major in case you change your mind about career down the road, and want to have something else to leverage. If any of the above careers sound good, then I'd personally go for the double major. Good luck!

What careers will be available for me with a major in political science and a minor in communications?
Q. People have been telling me that I won't have very many job opportunities with a major in political science and a minor in communications. I know this is a good background to go into law school, but other than that, what types of careers will be available to me?

A. I would try to go to work for a Congressman or Rep and develop that job into just exactly what you want. That is IF U enjoy that business. Another is seeking out a job with a well known local media organization, T V - radio - etc. Work hard with your nose down and your butt up that will impress your bosses. A good way to impress employers is to start early and stay late doing other than what you were asked to do. God Bless
