A voting system or electoral system is a method by which voters make a choice between options, often in an election or on a policy referendum. A voting system contains rules for valid voting, and how votes are counted and aggregated to yield a final result. Common voting systems are majority rule, proportional representation or plurality voting with a number of variations and methods such as first-past-the-post or preferential voting. The study of formally defined voting systems is called voting theory, a subfield of political science, economics or mathematics. With majority rule, those who are unfamiliar with voting theory are often surprised that another voting system exists, or that "majority rule" systems can produce results not supported by a majority. If every election had only two choices, the winner would be determined using majority rule alone. However, when there are three or more options, there may not be a single option that is preferred by a majority. Without the EC, nobody would care about the midwest. They would only campaign in, and cater too the dense population areas, i.e. New England and the California Coast. 2. The EC makes adding up votes MUCH easier. Q. Instead of putting peoples names on the ballots. Have all the potential canidates make a list of of what issues thay plan on addresssing during their term, and what their priority is for each issue. Then the voters would rank the top then issues they would like to see. And the canidate with the highest score wins. Past voting records could factor into the equation. I think this would help eliminate voting for a person because you heard their name more or just because of the political party they belong to, and force people to vote for what they would actually like their elected officails to do. That would only work if everybody agreed on what the right course on each issue is.. which is no where near realistic. A blind vote could potentially work if each candidate provided a "what I plan to do about.." for every important issue and voters could decide from that.
