Voting is a method for a group such as a meeting or an electorate to make a decision or express an opinion—often following discussions, debates, or election campaigns. It is often found in democracies.

Process of voting

Representative democracies discern the will of the people by a common voting procedure:

  • Individual voter registration and qualification,
  • Opening the election for a set time period,
  • Registration of voters at established voting places,
  • Distribution of ballots with preset candidates, issues, and choices (including the write-in option in some cases),
  • Selection of preferred choices (often in secret, called a secret ballot),
  • Secure collection of ballots for unbiased counting, and
  • Proclamation of the will of the voters as the will of the people for their government.

Are people voting using the reason that Obamas black to vote for him?
Q. i generally want him to win because mccain and bush drive me up the wall . im british so i can't vote anyway and i wouldnt trust my choice anyway because i know enough to not want mccain but not enough to elect obama. However , on YA i see people are voting for him because they want a black president , and i've found that very scary . Can't they look past that . People need to stop seeing themselves as white or black or whatever .

A. If he wasn't black, Hillary would have won the nomination. Not everyone who votes for him does so because he is black, but there are enough people for whom this is the only reason they want him in office. If he was white, keeping all the other characteristics and qualifications constant, there is no way he would have this much support.

What is the point of voting if you don't vote for a Democrat or a Republican?
Q. I am not very political, but it seems as if ones votes would pretty much be wasted if they were not for either a Dem or a Repub. What is the point of voting independent, etc?

A. Well they sometimes take enough votes away that one party doesn't win. Supposedly Gore lost due to Ralph Nader and his party. If you notice the last three times the different parties got booted out due to crummy performance and the people got sick of what they were doing. The Democrats get booted and then the Republicans get booted and now looks like the Democrats are about to get the boot again. Due to the "good ole boy" system and payoff deals and the money the two big time parties have it would be hard for someone to step up. When Ross Perot ran Clinton got 40 million votes and bush a few less, but he got 20 million, which were votes meant for the Republicans and he had the money on his own the run on. Maybe someday it will happen. [cont.]

Is voting for a third party candidate a wasted vote?
Q. I don't truly support either of the candidates this year, but I do think one of them is the 'lesser of two evils'. My friend keeps telling me to vote for that one instead of possibly going third party, because he says a third party vote is a wasted vote. Thoughts?

A. If more citizens voted for what they really believe in, we would have more than 2 party system already... And definitely a better choice of candidates... STUPID statement "lesser of two evils" is still an EVIL... Why follow the crowd??? Didn't your mother ever told you if some one jumps of the bridge, you shouldn't follow... Voting for Independent
